Cattlemen enjoy annual picnic

The annual Franklin County Cattleman’s Association summer picnic drew a crowd for good food and good times.

More than 150 members of the Franklin County Cattleman’s Association braved the sweltering July heat to enjoy music and fellowship at the organization’s annual summer picnic at the Slick Rock Pavilion on Cedar Lake. Directors of the organization spent the hot afternoon cooking hamburgers and hotdogs in preparation.
“It has been a hot day, but this is always a great event,” said Roe Hughes, who has been a member of the organization from its inception and a director for 26 years.
Steven Jackson, the association president, thanked the members for the hard work they do in recruiting new members and said it has paid off.
“Franklin County has one of the most active Cattleman organizations in the state,” said Jackson. “Based on population, we may be one of the smaller counties, but we have the second largest organization in the state.”
The Franklin County Cattleman’s Association boasts 591 members. The organization has also increased its membership by 127 new members in the past year.
Jackson attributes the growth to the organization’s community service.
“We support the American Red Cross, we do several steak sandwich sales throughout the year, we do a beef giveaway to schools for their consumer science classes, and we award scholarships to students every year,” said Jackson. “I think when people know their membership dollars are being put to a good use, they don’t have a problem being part of an organization.”
The Franklin County Cattleman’s Association has awarded more than $135,000 in scholarships to Franklin County students.
