by Ally Willis for the FCT

History was made last Tuesday when the Russellville Girls’ Golf Team won their first match ever.

Lawrence County traveled to Twin Pines Country Club on March 17, the home course to the Russellville Golden Tigers. The 2014 season was the school’s first season in the history of the high school to have a female golf team.

The young team achieved the historic first women’s victory last Tuesday, though the team is still very young with four of the seven players being in middle school.

Shian Sillett, a seventh grade student, shot a 65. Carly Grace McCalpin, an eighth grader, scored a 57. Macy Reeves, a junior, came in with a score of 56, and Bailey Tubb, a freshman, shot a 55.

Leading scores from the Lawrence County match-up were Ashton Moore, a freshman, with a 53, Morgan Moon, an eighth grader, with at 52 and top scorer for the day was Josie Willis, eighth grader, with a score of 50.

The Lady Tigers’ total score was a 155 with Lawrence County falling four strokes behind with a total of 159.

The team missed three weeks of practices due to the weather this winter.

“As soon as the girls were able to practice, I saw improvements in their scores,” said Russellville golf coach Ryan Brewer. “I expect to see a good season out of these girls.”

The girl’s next match is set for March 31 against Deshler High School at Cherokee Valley Country Club.
