BOONEVILLE, MISS. – The Northeast Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team recently wrapped up the 2013-14 season with its annual postseason banquet on Saturday, May 3.

In conjunction with former University of Alabama and two-time Final Four coach Ed Nixon presenting the keynote address, Lady Tigers headman Brian Alexander handed out his yearly awards at the ceremony held inside Tupelo’s First Baptist Church.

“We look back in an unselfish context and are able to hand out these awards,” Alexander said.

“We promote that every person on the team has a different role and that role is of equal importance. It’s huge that we are able to recognize those key pieces to our season.”

One of the players recognized is Red Bay High School alumna Lexy Lindsey, who has stood out not only on the court but in the classroom as well.

Lindsey vigorously upheld the commitment of a student athlete to academics first and sports second to claim the Highest Grade Point Average award at a perfect 4.0.

Lindsey is one of four current Lady Tigers that have been inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, including Angelia Allen, Jasmine Allen and Kierra Erby.

When not focusing on the classroom, Lindsey appeared in all but one game for Northeast during the last campaign. She was a smooth shooter and hit 90.9 percent of her attempts from the free throw line, which topped the team.

The 5-6 guard served as one of the top ball handlers for the Lady Tigers and held a 1.5 assist to turnover ratio. That number was one of the ten best among all athletes in the MACJC.

The Red Bay High School product was also a threat from beyond the arc and connected on 25 percent of her shots from that range, good for third best on the squad. Lindsey averaged 8.9 points per 40 minutes.

“I am extremely proud of this team,” Alexander said.

“We reached our potential and overcame adversity that allowed us to teach life lessons that these student athletes will remember for the rest of their lives.”
