Baking contest for men to be held Thursday

Everybody loves to eat their mother’s cooking but in honor of Mother’s Day Weekend, the men in the family will have a chance to show off their baking skills as well.

Regency Square Mall in Florence is hosting the “Patty Cake, Patty Cake, Baker’s Man” cake-baking and decorating contest on Thursday, May 10, at 6 p.m. in Center Court at Regency Square Mall.

All non-professional male bakers over the age of 18 are invited to participate in this special event that will benefit the Colbert-Lauderdale Attention Homes.

There is no fee to register for the contest, but you must register prior to the event in order to participate.

Since no actual baking can be done inside the mall, all participants must bring a cake they have baked themselves and everything they will need to assemble it on the mall premises. They will be allowed to have one male helper over the age of 10 to help them decorate and assemble the cake in the allotted one-hour timeframe.

Participants will also need to bring the same cake in a sheet cake form that can be cut up into small samples for the public to taste and judge.

Tickets for members of the general public who wish to sample all the cakes and judge their favorite will be $5. These tickets can be purchased in advance at HoneyBaked Ham Cafe in Regency Square Mall and Lola’s Gifts and Flowers located at 214 N. Montgomery Street in Sheffield. Tickets will also be available at the mall the night of the event.

The cake and decoration must represent Mother’s Day or the “mother” in their life. The cakes will be judged in two categories, Best Overall Design and Taste and People’s Choice Award. The Best Overall category will be judged by a panel of three professionals in the food and/or food-related industry; the winner will be awarded a Mother’s Day brunch for four people from the main sponsor of this event, Crocodile Ed’s Grill & Fish Market as well as a gift certificate from another of our sponsors, Lola’s Gifts and Flowers to buy something special for the mother in their life.

The “People’s Choice” Award will be given to the person with the best-tasting cake as judged by the public. The winner in this category will win a manicure-pedicure and a gift certificate from Lola’s Gifts and Flowers for that very special woman in their life.

Proceeds collected from the public tasting fee will support the Colbert-Lauderdale Attention Homes, which have been providing a home-like atmosphere for area youth between the ages of 10 and 18 since 1974. The Girls Home is located in Florence and the Boys Home is located in Sheffield. The youth are at-risk and disadvantaged and referred through the Juvenile Court System. The Attention Homes are unique because they offer a supervised living environment that is structured. Each year, hundreds of young lives are impacted through the Attention Home philosophy that “a little attention now will prevent detention later.”

All amateur bakers in the area are encouraged to come out and participate in this fun contest that will benefit a great cause.
