Red Bay girls beat Phil Campbell in rematch

J.R. Tidwell/FCT Hannah Sharp (34) of Red Bay looks for a teammate while defended by Whitley Yocom (11) of Phil Campbell Thursday night.

The Phil Campbell Lady Bobcats once again found themselves playing the Red Bay Lady Tigers Thursday night in the Franklin County Tournament at Northwest Shoals Community College.

This time, however, Red Bay would come out with a bigger win than nine points. The Lady Tigers won 59-32.

“We knew that Red Bay would be after us,” Phil Campbell head coach Darit Riddle said. “We kept it close at the half, but in the third they came out to play and we didn’t.”

The teams were tied at 6-6 with less than three minutes remaining in the first. Field goals by Hannah Sharp, Kasey Sparks and Lexy Lindsey gave Red Bay a 12-6 lead at the end of the first.

The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bobcats 11-7 to take a 23-13 lead four minutes before halftime.

Carlee Berry drained a three for Red Bay. Whitley Yocom answered with a lay-up, but Jade Ezzell picked up two-straight and ones for the Lady Tigers.

Red Bay went into the half ahead 32-17. The Lady Tigers kept up a full-court press to keep Phil Campbell from scoring, giving up only six points to the Lady Bobcats in the third quarter, allowing them to take a 49-23 lead.

“We played a different defense tonight than we did the last time we played them,” Red Bay head coach Donnie Roberts said. “We made too many fundamental mistakes, so we can play better.”

Phil Campbell was unable to find an answer for Red Bay, allowing the Lady Tigers to pick up the win.

Red Bay will move on to play the winner of the Belgreen/Tharptown match.

“We played [them] earlier this season, but it’s been awhile,” Roberts said. “I’m going to have to see what they’re doing on offense and defense.”

Sharp led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 16 points. Also scoring for Red Bay were Sparks (11), Ezzell (8), Morgan Mason (7), Lauren Pacetti (6), Berry (5), Lindsey (4), Monique Dulaney (1) and Elizabeth Wooten (1).

Ciara Harville led Phil Campbell with 11. Also scoring for the Lady Bobcats were Yocom (6), Hope Cook (6), Autumn Thomas (3), Ashley Baker (2), Madison Hardy (2) and Sarah Hilliard (2).
