Russellville streak ends in Athens

ATHENS – Russellville’s 31-game winning streak ended Thursday with a 13-3 loss at Athens, putting the Golden Tigers’ hopes of a Class 5A, Area 16 title in jeopardy.

The Golden Tigers are now 31-4 overall and 4-1 in area play. They needed to sweep Athens in a doubleheader in order to win the area crown, but those games were not concluded in time to be included in today’s edition of The Franklin County Times.

Athens got on the board in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI single by pitcher Luke Mould. A three-run shot to left center by Chandler Brock two batters later put the Golden Eagles up 5-0.

Justin Anderson tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third with a two-RBI single.

Russellville responded in the top of the fourth, scoring its first run of the game as Austin Husley crossed the plate on a double by Logan Ezell. A fielder’s choice by Casey Herring plated another run and pulled the Golden Tigers to within five.

Matthew Duncan drew a walk to lead off the fifth for Russellville and later scored on a single by Husley for the Golden Tigers’ final run of the game.

Brock went yard for the second time on the day during the bottom of the inning with a two-out, two-run shot to right field, making it 9-3. William Smith ended the game an inning later with a 3-run shot to right center.

Leading the Russellville offense were Hulsey with two singles, Ezell with a double and an RBI and John Batchelor with a single.
