Tharptown softball advances to regionals

The Tharptown Wildcats finished runnerup in Class 2A Area 14 and will advance to the regionals.

The Wildcats lost their opening game to Lindsey Lane 3-0. The two teams met again in the loser’s bracket after Lindsey Lane lost to Lexington. In the rematch, Tharptown beat Lindsey Lane handily 11-6 to earn a shot at Lexington for the area title.

In the second game against Lindsey Lane, senior Alyssa Fischer collected four hits in five at bats. Fischer hit a solo home run to centerfield in the sixth inning, doubled in the second, singled in the first and seventh innings.

Gabi Johnson and Lexi Little had two hits each. Fischer got the win in the circle pitching five innings, allowing five hits.

Tharptown lost to the Golden Bears 11-6 to finish runner-up in the tournament.

Class 2A Area 11

The Belgreen Bulldogs were in prime position to win the Class 2A Area 11 title after beating Sulligent 9-0 to open the tournament.

They faced the Blue Devils again on Monday, May 4, after they beat Red Bay in two straight games to eliminate the Tigers.

Zoey Blaxton pitched the one-hit shutout of Sulligent, striking out seven Blue Devil batters. Belgreen secured the win, in part, due to a sixrun fifth inning. Kendra Williams hit a solo home run to center field. An error then scored one run, and Mackinley Hogan singled to score another run. Marlie Terry singled, scoring one run, and Shaylyn Bryant singled, scoring two runs.

Belgreen piled up 11 hits in the game. Bryant, Jemma Moore, and Terry each collected two hits. Bryant went 2-for-4 at the plate and led the team with four runs.

In Red Bay’s losses, Charley Lindley and Bella Blackburn collected two hits in the first game. McKenna Young had three hits in the second game, and Kyla Blackburn had two hits.

Class 3A Area 13

Phil Campbell survived the weekend losing to Mars Hill and beating Sheffield. The Bobcats were slated to face Mars Hill again on Monday, May 4, for a shot at the finals.

Phil Campbell lost to Mars Hill in the opening game of the tournament 13-3 before beating Sheffield 15-4 in the loser’s bracket.

The Bobcats lone highlight in the Mars Hill game was two hits by Shiloh Madden.

Against Sheffield, Madden got the work done in the circle allowing just six hits, four runs, five walks and five strikeouts.

Addie James broke the game open in the bottom of the first with a tworun triple to give Phil Campbell a 4-1 lead.

Georgia Motes went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bobcats. James, Tinlee Parker, and Crimson Garrison each drove in two runs for Phil Campbell.

Class 1A Area 13

The Class 1A Area 13 tournament was scheduled to begin on Monday, May 4, with Vina facing Lynn. Phillip and Hackleburg will square off in the other matchup in the tournament.
