Red Devils start season with three wins

The Vina varsity baseball team opened the 2011 season with three victories, blowing out Brilliant 17-1, beating Decatur Heritage 13-10 and edging past Covenant Christian 12-11.

Clay Pierce picked up the win against Brilliant by allowing two hits and striking out five during three innings of work on the mound. He also had a great day at the plate, hitting a pair of doubles, a triple and driving in four runs for the Red Devils.

Vina scored 10 runs in the second inning to pull away for the win.

Drake Hester recorded a pair of hits and three RBIs for Vina while Ethan Pharr, Brody Roberts and Adam Wilson had two RBIs each.

Channing Haithcock had a solo home run while Adam Pharr and Cody Renfrow had one RBI each.

Roberts pitched two innings of relief, giving up no hits.

Nick Schmittou was the winning pitcher against Decatur Heritage with Pierce earning the save. Pierce also recorded a single, double and triple and drove in four runs for the Red Devils.

Haithcock drove in three runs on two hits while Ethan Pharr and Schmittou had two RBIs each.

Patrick White scored four runs and Kyler Childers had an RBI double in pinch-hitting duty.

Roberts recorded the win on the mound against Covenant Christian with Adam Pharr earning the save.

Pierce was 3-for-4 with four RBIs while Renfrow’s two-run single in the bottom of the 6th inning gave the Red Devils the lead for good.
