The Russellville varsity boys avoided the dreaded sub-regional match up against Lee-Huntsville with a 74-64 victory against Athens in the Class 5A, Area 16 Tournament finals Monday night.

The Golden Tigers had four players reach double-digit scoring to help Russellville earn a home game in the sub-regional round against J.O. Johnson.

Trailing by nine in the third quarter, Russellville rallied and built a 14-point lead late in the fourth quarter.

Russellville’s game against J.O. Johnson will be Friday night. The Golden Tigers already have one home loss to the Jaguars this season.

Russellville reached the finals of the area tournament with a 79-49 win against Lawrence County.

Graham led the way with 19 points while Daniels added 17 points and Duncan scored 11 points

RHS girls fall

The Russellville varsity girls hopes of reaching the sub-regional round of the state playoffs ended Friday with a 61-58 loss to Lawrence County.

The Lady Golden Tigers had beaten Lawrence County twice during the regular season, but the Lady Red Devils pulled off the upset at the right time to dash Russellville’s dreams of a deep run in the playoffs.
