Tharptown sweeps Phillips, Red Bay splits with Sulligent

The area races for the Class 2A, Area 12 girls and Class 1A, Area 13 boys got a little clearer as Red Bay and Tharptown were able to play area contests that were canceled last week by the winter weather.

The Lady Tigers defeated Sulligent 67-35 Monday to complete area play with a 6-0 record and the right to host the area tournament.

The game was slowed due to several foul  — there were 70 personal fouls called in the game — that sent both teams to the free throw line throughout the night.

“I’m not complaining,” said Red Bay coach Donnie Roberts.

Of the 102 points scored by both teams, 50 of those points came from free throws.

Hannah Sharp led the Lady Tigers with 18 points while Jade Ezzell scored 10 points. Also scoring for Red Bay were Lauren Pacetti (8), Morgan McKinney (7), Lexy Lindsey (7), Mariah Horton (6), Leah Fuller (5), Whitney Sharp (4), MaRanda Burgett (2) and Alaina Hester (1).

The Tharptown boys stayed on pace to force a tie with Belgreen atop Class 1A, Area 13 with a win against Phillips Wednesday as every player scored for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats opened a 13-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the game.

Tharptown will close out its area schedule Monday at Vina in another game that had to be rescheduled due to the snow.

The Tigers fell to 2-4 in area play with their loss to Sulligent Monday.

Red Bay trailed by 10 points at the end of the first quarter and shaved the Sulligent advantage to 30-26 by halftime, but the Blue Devils pulled away in the second half to secure the win.
