Tree ornaments are meaningful to me

One thing about Christmas that I have come to enjoy is decorating for the holiday season. This is especially true now that David and I have our own house.

While I love the wreaths and the garland and the lights, my favorite decoration is our Christmas tree. David and I have a “hodge podge” tree, meaning there isn’t a specific theme. We just have different ornaments that mean something to each of us.

David has ornaments from his childhood and ornaments that represent things he likes: Superman ornaments because he loved Superman when he was growing up; ornaments from Texas because he and his family lived there for several years while his dad went to seminary; Three Stooges ornaments because he enjoyed watching episodes with his Mamaw; and Alabama football ornaments because he’s been a life-long fan.

I have ornaments representing my childhood and my interests as well: Twilight ornaments because I am a huge fan of the series; seal ornaments because that was my last name before I got married last year; ornaments from different clubs and organizations I was a part of in high school; and ornaments from my parents’ tree that I loved growing up that my mother let me have when I got married.

We have also acquired a few ornaments that are special to us as a couple: an “Our First Christmas” ornament with Rudolph on it; a boy-and-girl gingerbread ornament that we had personalized on our honeymoon in Gatlinburg; several ornaments with our pictures on them; and ornaments we were given at our wedding.

The past two years, it has been fun for both of us when we’ve put up our tree to see all these ornaments that remind us of special times in our childhood and special times in our relationship.

One day we may have a fancy tree with a specific theme and sparkly ornaments, but I know that I will always want to have a “hodge-podge” tree to remind us of the memories and the fun times we’ve had over the years.

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas.
