Autumn is fast approaching

By Bob Stickley

As we look around us these days one must wonder where did our summer go to so fast?

Well, one thing autumn is fast approaching and of course, many things happen in autumn.

To begin with though – and I don’t think there will be any disagreement — that we just experienced the hottest summer in years. While the temperatures hung around the 95 to 100 degree mark for nearly a month, the power bills just got bigger and bigger.

But fall is fast approaching and that means football and band performances.

Some folks might say, “Well, I just don’t care anything about sports and all the hoopla about football.”

But here in Russellville, we have had some great teams who have been something to be proud of over the past several years — something a lot of towns would like to brag about on their city streets.

Then there comes the college football season and we have many teams here in Alabama such as the University of North Alabama, which won the conference title last year and are picked to win it again this year.

Then there is the University of Alabama, which last year just happened to be crowned the national champions.

And how could we forget about the Auburn Tigers, who under a new head coach have begun to blossom again and will get better as time moves on.

We have too many great athletes in Alabama for this not to happen.

There are many activities here for our autumn and winter seasons that will occupy our lives until spring arrives again.

There is a great family-oriented show held every second Saturday of the month when the Roxy presents the Kerry Gilbert Show, and it’s worth going to see. In November the Roxy will host a Bluegrass show on the 27th.

There are also several activities that take place at the schools, so get out of your recliner and support these programs.

Around the first weekend of December the Chamber of Commerce presents a Christmas parade that gets bigger and better every year.
