Lions look to increase lead in GSC
By Staff
The University of North Alabama took a week off from Gulf South Conference play last weekend and actually gained a game on the rest of the league as Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist both lost their second league game of the season.
Now at 7-0 overall and with a two game lead on the rest of the GSC field at 4-0. The Lions return to conference play against one of their arch-rivals, the Delta State Statesmen, on Thursday night at Braly Stadium.
This is a must-win game for the Statesmen to have any chance at post-season play. For the No.-2 ranked UNA Lions, this game remains another step toward the goal of a GSC title and Division II playoff appearance.
Amazingly this will be the seventh meeting between UNA and Delta State in the last four seasons. The two schools met in both the regular season and post-season in each of the last three years.
Turnovers have played a huge role in UNA's recent dominance in the series. North Alabama has won five of the last seven meetings with DSU and is a Plus-22 in turnover margin against Delta State since 2005.
UNA will put its 23-game regular season winning streak at home at Braly Stadium on the line. The Lions also have a 16-game overall winning streak at home, dating back to a playoff loss to Delta State on Dec. 2, 2006.
