Enjoying my favorite flavor

By Staff
Melissa Cason
When I was a kid, I loved to eat ice cream.
My favorite flavor is classic chocolate. Growing up, my brother, Robert, and I did not get to enjoy sweets and junk food very often.
Our mother kept a tight reign on the sweets in our house.
So, when we got ice cream, it was like a special occasion.
In the summer time, our dad would bring in a tub of Blue Bell ice cream. He'd usually bring in chocolate or Neapolitan. The only ice cream that entered in our front door during the years we lived in Texas was Blue Bell.
This particular ice cream is available pretty much everywhere now, but in the 1980s, it was a Texas classic. I remember us eating the ice cream after supper, and only if we ate all our supper like we were supposed to.
When we moved to Arkansas, I was 10, and the thing I missed the most about Texas was that we couldn't get Blue Bell ice cream.
Blue Bell hadn't crossed the state line in 1988, when we moved so I had to enjoy another brand of cold, creamy bliss.
The local brand was Yarnell's. It was okay.
After a few years, we got used to eating Yarnell's ice cream just like everyone else in Arkansas, but when we'd visit family back in Texas, I'd always have to get some ice cream before we went home.
By the mid-1990s, Blue Bell started being distributed to other states.
Arkansas was one of the first states other than Texas to begin seeing Blue Bell in their grocer's freezers.
Today, Blue Bell ice cream is my favorite brand of ice cream, and is available at my local grocery store.
While I am not so picky to want only this one brand of ice cream, I do enjoy eating the quality ice cream I remember as a kid.
Even now, when I see the Blue Bell package, it brings back memories of my early childhood-the time I spent living in Texas.
