Worthless check unit worth its weight in gold
By Staff
The Franklin County Worthless Check Unit announced that they have recovered almost $100,000 in the past six months.
The check unit is operated under the authority of Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing and is responsible for recovering money for businesses lost to worthless checks.
Businesses who accept checks take a risk every time they accept one as payment. When a check comes back to the businesses, they are out money and time trying to get the check picked up by the issuer. Many times the businesses have to pay fees at their bank because of the insufficient funds, compounding their loss.
While taking checks are a risk for any business, many cannot simply afford to decline one as payment. Many businesses struggle to make a sale, and to not accepting checks as payment can turn customers off.
This is where the check unit comes into play. It takes the risk out of accepting checks.
Writing a check that you know is worthless is a crime, and offenders can be arrested and prosecuted.
The efforts of the check unit should be greatly appreciated by businesses because without this specialized unit, they might not see a penny in recovered check funds.
The Worthless Check Unit is every local businesses' big brother standing over their shoulder and making sure everything goes according to the law.
While recovery of those funds may seem slow to some, that does not mean that the unit is not trying to collect what is owed.
Collecting money is not easy feat and every penny collected is a sign that our county holds offenders accountable for their behavior.
