Committee plans to purchase 35 banners for Centennial event

Red Bay's Centennial Celebration banner committee members are in the process of applying for a grant to cover the cost of the banners for the celebration.
The committee plans to purchase 35 banners to be hung throughout town. The banners will cost $6,000. The grant is being offered through General Mills' My Hometown Helper grant, and everyone's comments are needed for the grant process.
"We need everyone to go on line and say how much they would like for Red Bay to receive this grant," Tammy Montgomery, banner committee member, said.
To add your comment, go to myhometownhelper.com and click on fund a project. Then, click on the state and town and add your comment.
"We need a lot of good comments so the company will know we are all interested in this [project]," Montgomery said.
General Mills will award the grant based on community involvement of the programs so the more comments that are uploaded, the better chance Red Bay has to receiving the grant, Montgomery said.
The banners themselves will feature a train, and the year 1907. They will also have a slogan of "Pride in our Past, Faith in our Future", and will not mention the centennial celebration specifically so that they can be used for future events as well, Montgomery said.
"We want the banners to be a birthday present for our town," Montgomery said.
The committee is currently asking local businesses for help with the deposit for the signs so that they can be ordered as soon as possible.
"We need half of the money up front in order to place our order," Montgomery said. "We are seeking donations for the deposit from local businesses."
