Homewood football coach Bob Newton, a graduate of Russellville High School, will be one of 11 people inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame later this month.
Already a member of the Franklin County Sports Hall of Fame, Newton was a senior on the 1967 Russellville football team that won the first of back-to-back state championships.
He later graduated from Samford University and began his coaching career with a three-year stint in Sprayberry, GA.
Newton arrived at Homewood in the mid-1970s and served as offensive line coach for 19 years before taking over the program as head coach and athletic director in 1996.
The Patriots have become a perennial powerhouse with Newton at the helm, winning five state championships and posting a phenomenal 124-24 record during his 11 seasons as head coach.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Monday, March 19, at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery.
