Russellville's Cub Scout Pack 39 is busy preparing for their upcoming Pinewood Derby, which will be held on Saturday, March 10 beginning with registration at 9 a.m.
The Pinewood Derby is annual event for Pack 39, and the Cub Scouts as a whole. The event will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Russellville, Beth Pounders, Den leader, said.
"We usually have about 30 scouts to participate in the event yearly," she added.
Each scout purchases a derby kit for $7, and must create their own racecar to be raced at the event. The derby kit contains a single block of wood, which will become the car, and the wheels for the scouts to design, build, and assemble a racecar from scratch.
At the beginning of the event, the honor of best car is awarded to each den.
After the best car is awarded, the race begins. Each scout will race their cars on a downhill track to see who wins.
"It usually takes a while for all the boys to race their cars," Pounders said.
The derby teaches scouts the importance of fair play, crafts kills, and good sportsmanship, Pounders said.
