Russellville's West Elementary School will celebrate Read Across America next week with special events with a focus on reading.
School librarian Mary Kay Rogers has given this year's Read week a Seuss theme. Each day has activities based on Dr. Seuss' books.
"We want to use this time to get kids excited about reading," Rogers said.
In addition to the themed days, several storytellers will read to the children throughout the week. School Board member Jerry Groce, Joey Rushing, Mrs. Leida Ray, and Suzanne Langcuster will read to the children during the week's festivities, Roger's said.
"We are so lucky to have such involved board members here," Rogers said. "I know the children will enjoy all of our storytellers this week."
Read Across America is a week filled with reading sponsored nationally by the National Education Association. Reading is the most important tool that children can have during life, and WES is committed to helping students and their parents get excited about learning to read, Rogers said.
The themed days are as follows: Monday, "The Cat in the Hat" day, wear black, white and read; Tuesday, "Fox in Socks" day, wear crazy sock; Wednesday, "Wacky Wednesday" day, wear mismatched clothing; Thursday, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" day, wear Grinchy green; Friday, Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss, were a hat.
Dr. Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born on March 2, 1904 and left his earth in 1991. His books have been read in millions of households for generations. In his life, he wrote and illustrated 48 children's books, according to Wikipedia encyclopedia.
