The Phil Campbell Math teams placed in the top 10 in the recent Muscle Shoals Math Competition held Jan. 20 at Muscle Shoals Middle School.
Thirty-four sixth, seventh and eighth grade math students competed against 15 other teams to place fifth, and sixth overall in the competition, Judy Baker, sponsor, said.
There were three divisions for the competition, and Phil Campbell competed in the small division. The seventh and eighth grade team placed fifth overall in their division, and was awarded a trophy for their efforts.
In addition to placing fifth, team member D.J. Hall placed sixth in the individual scores, and received a trophy for this accomplishment, Baker said.
The sixth grade team placed sixth in the division team competition, but only the top five teams received a trophy.
"We are proud of our students, and they are excited about this achievement," Baker said.
During the competition, each student was tested individually. They were given 25 math problems on their grade level, and given one hour to complete the test. After this phase of the competition, the students participated in team competition called Cyphering. Each team sent four students to compete against other teams to gain points.
"Once the competition is over, they add up the points, and give awards according to those scores," Baker said.
