Melissa Dozier-Cason, FCT staff writerThe Country Cottage of Russellville is now accepting applications for their 2007 Bragwell Massey Scholarship.
The $250 scholarship will be awarded to a 2007 graduate wishing to pursue a career in the healthcare industry from any Franklin County School, Betty Chesnut, managing director for the Cottage, said.
The cash award may be used at the school of the recipient's choice.
This the second year the Cottage has offered the scholarship, Chesnut said.
"Country Cottage wants to encourage the dreams of area students," Chesnut said.
Last year's recipient, Tara Tillery is currently attending Northwest Shoals Community College. Tillery is a 2006 graduate of Russellville High School, Chesnut said.
The scholarship was named in honor of the Cottage's first residents, Eugene "Piney" Bragwell, and Gladys Massey, Chesnut said.
"We wanted to honor our first residents, Mr. Bragwell and Mrs. Massey [by naming the scholarship after them]," Chesnut said.
Bragwell became a resident at the Cottage in April 1999 and is a native of Belgreen. Massey moving into the Cottage in March 1999, and is from Russellville, Chesnut said.
"I am a teacher myself so I am touched that a student is going to receive this scholarship to go toward their education," Massey said.
Applications for the scholarship are available at the Cottage and at any Franklin County School. The scholarship committee will review the applications to select a winner based on short story, extracurricular activities, GPA and letter of recommendation, Chesnut said.
