The Russellville Golden Tigers' strong start to the season has earned them a spot in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 5A Top 10, which was released for the first time this season on Thursday.
The Golden Tigers, who won their first six games prior to Thursday night's loss to Florence in the semifinals of the TimesDaily Classic, debuted at No. 8.
They were four spots behind their newest Class 5A, Area 16 rival, Decatur. The Red Raiders dropped down from Class 6A after last season and opened up at No. 4 in Thursday's Class 5A rankings.
A handful of other boys teams in northwest Alabama were also ranked.
Central (8-2) opened at No. 8 in Class 4A, and Lauderdale County (10-1) checked in at No. 4 in the Class 3A poll.
Cherokee (6-1) was ranked No. 9 in Class 2A, and Covenant Christian (11-1) opened at No. 4 in Class 1A. Hazlewood (4-1) was No. 8.
