Red Bay Senior Center may lose transportation

RED BAY – Red Bay's Senior Citizens Program is in danger of losing its van due to lack of participation.
The senior citizen's center offers a meal and other activities daily to Red Bay's seniors, Eloise Thorn, senior citizen's program director, said.
"We have 16 residents coming to the center," Thorn said.
In addition to transporting seniors to meetings and other events, the van is used for deliver homebound meals for senior citizens who cannot get out, Linda Holcomb, Red Bay city clerk, said.
"Right now we have nine meals delivered each day," Thorn said.
The senior center is in jeopardy of losing its transportation, which would affect attendance at the center and the homebound meal delivery, Holcomb said.
Mayor Jeff Reid has announced at several council meetings that the program may lose funding due to lack of participation if more seniors don't utilize the program. Reid urged every Red Bay senior to participate in this program before funding is cut.
Anyone wishing to participate in the program may do so by going to the senior citizen's building to sign up, Thorn said.
The program is funded through the North Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG). The City of Red Bay currently contributes about $7,500 per year to NACOLG, Holcomb said.
