Red Bay falls to No. 2 Fyffe

By Staff
Bart Moss RED BAY – Red Bay coach Dale Jeffreys knew it would be a daunting task when his team took the field against the undefeated and second ranked team in 2A, the Fyffe Red Devils.
Coming into the game the 12-0 Red Devils averaged more than 40 points per game and gave up less than 10 points per game. The results Friday night were no different as Fyffe rolled to a 37-7 win over the Tigers.
Fyffe scored 21 second quarter points to give the Red Devils a comfortable 28-0 halftime lead. Red Bay scored their only points with 42 seconds to go in the game on a fumbled snap that Pablo Makepeace picked up and sprinted 82 yards for the final score of the game.
Prior to the Makepeace run Fyffe had held the Red Bay offense to only 66 total yards and no points.
"Fyffe is one of the better teams we have played in my ten years here at Red Bay," said Jeffreys. "They have a lot of speed, they are very physical and they are well coached in all phases of the game.
"I have no doubt they will find their way to Birmingham."
The Red Devils piled up 348 total yards on the night- 282 on the ground and 66 through the air.
Fyffe also benefited from Red Bay miscues. The Tigers turned the ball over four times. The Red Devils converted three of those turnovers in 20 points.
Fyffe first half scoring started late in the first quarter when Tyler Adams ran untouched into the end zone from five yards out for the games first score. Jason Ridgeway added the PAT to give the Red Devils a 7-0 lead with 2:42 to go in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter Tiger running back Pablo Makepeace coughed up the football at the Fyffe 38-yard line. On the Red Devils next play Tyler Adams hurdled over the first line of Red Bay defenders and sprinted 63 yards for the touchdown. Ridgeway's PAT was good giving Fyffe a 14-0 lead with 11:35 to go in the second quarter.
Fyffe scored again after a long drive midway through the second quarter when Taylor Thrash ran to pay dirt from seven yards out. Once again Ridgeway's PAT sailed through the uprights to give the Red Devils a 21-0 lead with 7:09 to go in the second quarter.
Fyffe ended Red Bay's next drive intercepting a pass near midfield. The Red Devils took advantage of the turnover scoring a few plays later on a 10-yard run by Thrash. Ridgeway's PAT gave the Red Devils a 28-0 halftime lead.
The second half started the same way it ended for the Tigers. Makepeace turned the ball over to the Red Devils on the Tiger 33-yard line. Two plays later Fyffe was in the end zone again on a 30 touchdown pass from Dustin Bryant to Jason Ridgeway. The kick failed leaving Fyffe with a commanding 34-0 lead with 7:48 to go in the third quarter.
The Red Devils added a 27-yard field goal by Ridgeway at the start of the fourth quarter to give them a 37-0 lead.
