The Franklin County Cattleman Association donated beef to the Family and Consumer Science programs in the county Friday, Oct. 13.
The Cattleman's Associated donated 75 pounds of ground chuck and 25 pounds of beef stir-fry to each school with a Family and Consumer Science program.
Red Bay, Russellville, and Phil Campbell offers the program to grades nine through twelve, Orland Britnell, director for the Cattleman's Association, said.
"We give 100 pounds of beef to each participating school in the county, and if another school in the county was to pick up the program [Family and Consumer Science] we will do the same for them," Britnell said.
Each school sent a representative to collect the donation.
The beef came frozen, and will be used during cooking sections of the Family and Consumer Science classes at each school.
Quick and easy recipes work well because of the 50-minute class schedule.
"We try to teach the students how to eat, and about the valuable nutrients that can be found in beef," Cindy Coan, F&CS teacher at Russellville High School, said.
The Franklin County Cattleman's Association has been donating meat to the F&CS programs at least 25 years, Britnell said.
"We used to have a whole cow processed for each school, but we wasted too much meat, so we began to purchase frozen beef for the schools and donate it to them every year," Britnell said.
