Russellville City Board of Education is among eight local school boards to receive the first ever Alabama Association of School Board's (AASB) President's award. The award was presented during the fall District 8 State Board of Education meeting held Sept. 25.
The President's Award is given to school boards who have at least 60 percent of their board members attend three or more AASB School Board Academy courses during the last school year, Denise L. Berkhalter, AASB Director of Public Relations, said.
"We are proud of the first winners of the AASB President's Award," Jim Methvin, AASB President, said. "They take their roles as education leaders seriously."
Three Russellville city board members attended last year's October Conference and annual convention, and the 2006 academy course in March.
Russellville BOE received a framed certificate recognizing their accomplishment. The board will also be recognized in an upcoming issue of Alabama School Boards magazine, Berkhalter said.
District 8 had eight local school boards to earn the award; only 30 school boards statewide were given this honor. The schools in District 8, besides Russellville, are Colbert, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Morgan, Winston County School Boards, and Muscle Shoals City School Board, according to the AASB.
