Runners from throughout Alabama and neighboring states, including several from Russellville, competed in the Huff ‘N Puff on the Bluff race and relay in Sheffield on March 11 in an effort to raise money for the Northwest Alabama Red Cross.
The Tennessee River Athletic Club began the race four years ago when its members expressed a desire for a 15K (9.3 miles) run in the area. At the same time, a group of volunteers were discussing having a race to raise money and awareness for the local Red Cross.
According to Michael, Sheffield was chosen as the location of the run because it posed less traffic hazards to the runners than other heavily populated areas and also provided a scenic view of the Tennessee River and downtown Sheffield. The Sheffield route also has several twists and turns so a large number of volunteers are needed each year.
Volunteers were placed at each turn to keep runners on track, call out times, and sometimes to direct traffic.
TRAC members also served as volunteers like Jerry Condrey who recorded time and Glen Alexander who got water for the contestants as they crossed the finish-line.
Some 257 runners competed Saturday morning, and at the end of the race, all contestants were treated to a food spread and awards ceremony.
Seven runners from Russellville placed highly in their age groups including Noah Tyra, fifth place in the male age group 20-24; Ericka McBrayer, seventh place in the female age group 25-29; Anthony McBrayer, second place and Clint Sikes, ninth place, both in male age group 30-34; and David Lowery, third place, Neal Taylor, fourth place, and Rick Suddith, 15th place all in the male age group 50-54.
While results aren't in yet to determine how much money was raised this year for the Red Cross, the past three years have provided more than $20,000 to the organization.
Runners who would like more information on next year's race can check out Huff ‘N Puff on the Bluff's website at www.huffnpuff15k.com.
TRAC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 1st Place Athletics in Florence. They can also be found on the web at www.shoalstrac.com. Membership in TRAC is open to runners and walkers at all fitness levels.
