Jessica Myrick struck out 10 in a complete game two-hitter last Tuesday as Tharptown defeated Colbert Heights 4-1 in junior high softball action.
"Jess pitched an excellent game for us," Tharptown coach Susie Sellers said. "She really did a great job. Colbert Heights had a great pitcher [Kristen Claunch], too. She was probably the toughest pitcher we've faced all year. Her control wasn't as good as Jess's, but she could flat-out throw it."
Tharptown (15-3) jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Laken Barnett reached base when strike three got away from the catcher, and Hollie Hines followed with a single. After Heather Hatton walked to loaded the bases, Barnett and Hines each scored on wild pitches to make it 2-0.
The score remained the same until the top of the fifth, when Tharptown added a pair of insurance runs.
Barnett drew a leadoff walk, and Hines followed with an RBI triple to make it 3-0. Hines then scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
Colbert Heights scored its only run off Myrick in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Hines led Tharptown with two hits, and Lauren Scott added a single.
The Lady Wildcats traveled to face Athens Bible on Tuesday and will host Red Bay on Thursday at Tom Strange Park in Russellville.
