UCP telethon set for March 5

By Staff
John Pilati FCT Staff Writer
United Cerebral Palsy has served children afflicted with cerebral palsy for decades. But you might be surprised to learn how much more UCP does to help children in Northwest Alabama.
The 42nd annual United Cerebral Palsy Telethon will be March 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on UPN Television Channel 15. All monies raised during the telethon will stay in the Shoals area to serve local children and their families, including several families in Franklin County.
Isbell said last year's telethon fell short of the goal of $125,000, and the agency is hoping for a rebound effort this year. Pledges may be called in early or mailed directly to UCP at 4212 Jackson Highway, Sheffield, 35660. All pledges received early will be acknowledged during the telethon, Isbell said.
UCP offers free therapy services whereby workers go to homes of children under age three to provide therapy, including physical therapy, speech and occupational therapy and special instruction, Isbell said.
Currently, UCP of Northwest Alabama serves more than 50 kids from Colbert, Lauderdale and Franklin Counties, as well as southern Tennessee.
Other services provided by UCP include a Wee-Care program where children with and without disabilities learn side by side in a positive learning environment. The Helping Hands Program provides care givers of disabled individuals an opportunity to enjoy some time for themselves. The first five hours are free, and any time after that is charged at $5 an hour.
For more information, contact Isbell or Linda Williamson at 381-4310 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily.
