    Et Cetera…

    By Staff
    GOOD MORNING
    FRANKLIN COUNTY
Today is Friday, February 24, 2006. Expect partly cloudy skies today and high of around 61. On this day in history:
1857-The United States Government receives the first shipment of perforated stamps.
1868-Mobile, Alabama, hosts the first Mardi Gras parade featuring a float.
1938-Du Pont begins production of nylon toothbrush bristles.
1940-Frances Langford records the Disney classic song, &#8220When You Wish Upon A Star.”
1964-Cassius Clay beats Sonny Liston to win the heavyweight boxing championship.
1976-The Eagles &#8220Greatest Hits” album becomes the first LP to sell over 2 million copies.
1980-The U.S. hockey team beats Finland to win the gold medal at Lake Placid, NY.
1981-Buckingham Palace announces the engagement of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.
People celebrating birthdays today include: television journalist Paula Zahn is 50; baseball's Eddie Murray is 50; actor Edward James Olmos is 59; actor Barry Bostwick is 60; actor James Farentino is 68; and actor Abe Vigoda is 85.
    GO BOBCATS
Congratulations to both the Phil Campbell Bobcats and Lady Bobcats on making it to the state class 2-A regional tournament in Hanceville. Getting to the regional tournament is a great accomplishment and the people of Phil Campbell should be proud of their teams. The boys beat a tough Cold Springs team 63-57 Wednesday night while the girls lost to Cleveland High School on Wednesday afternoon. The Bobcats play Pickens County today at 5:45 PM in Hanceville with the winner advancing to the final four in Birmingham next week. Good luck Bobcats!
    REMEMBER WHEN
On this day back in 1967 the following songs were at the top of the American charts:
Kind of a Drag by the Buckinghams
Love is Here and Now You're Gone by The Supremes
The Beat Goes On by Sonny and Cher
    GROWING FAMILY
Janise Wulf of Redding, California, has three great-grandchildren, twenty grandchildren, and eleven children. Make that twelve children. This week Janise Wulf became one of the oldest women in the world to ever give birth to a child at the age of 62. Wulf and her 48-year old husband Scott have a 3-year-old son and didn't want him to grow up alone, since all of her other children are older. Her last two children were both conceived by in vitro fertilization.
    MORE IRONY
The Iowa Association of Business and Industry has one primary goal and that is to promote Iowa as a good place to work, live, and do business. This year the Iowa Association of Business and Industry will hold their annual convention in South Sioux City, Nebraska.
    SATURDAY SCHOOL
You know the routine. You get up, fix a little breakfast, and drop the kids off at school. That's exactly what a 27-year-old League City, Texas, mom did with her 6-year old daughter last week but there was a slight problem. The mother dropped her child off at school on a Saturday. Despite the fact that there were no cars or people around the school, the woman still left her child at the school. Someone saw the girl standing out in the cold, rainy weather and called the police. The mother was charged with neglect and child endangerment and then placed in jail.
FROM THE &#8220YOU COULD BE LYING IF…” FILE
You could be lying to the police if you tell the officer your name is Robert when you have the name Cecil tattooed on your neck in plain sight. That's what happened in Columbus, Indiana, when authorities pulled over a man for driving erratically. Robert turned out to be Cecil Cramer, who was arrested for driving without a license and possession of ingredients to make methamphetamine.
    PRIORITIES
Zambia is ready to fight the bird flu if it becomes an epidemic in the African country. The government has set aside a whole $4,000 to deal with the problem. That's less than the $15,000 allocated for promoting wrestling in Zambia. Maybe they plan to wrestle the bird flu over there.
THERE ARE FLOODS…. AND THEN THERE ARE FLOODS
Elsa, a Bavarian village in Germany, was recently flooded with 20 inches of liquid pig manure. When a tanker containing the foul smelling liquid burst, 60,000 gallons of the stinky mess rolled through the streets of Elsa. One spokesperson called the green-brown liquid, &#8220the mother of all muck.”
    AND FINALLY
Congratulations to Darren Lucey of Brooklyn, New York. He won the recent haggis-eating contest in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, by consuming one and one-half pounds of haggis in just two minutes. What's that you say? Oh, you've never heard of haggis and would like to know what it is. Haggis is sheep's stomach stuffed with heart, tongue, liver, oats, and onions. Would you like that with a baked potato or fries?
