Hendrix, Boddie win top hoops awards

Whitney Boddie of Florence High School was named Miss Basketball and Richard Hendrix of Athens High School was tabbed Mr. Basketball by the Alabama Sports Writers Association Thursday at their annual player of the year banquet in Birmingham.
Boddie, named the girls Class 6A player of the year, averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the new Florence school during the 2004-05 season.
The 5-foot-7 guard, an Auburn signee, had already been selected to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game at Pelham on April 9.
Hendrix, selected the boys Class 5A player of the year, averaged 22.6 points and 14.0 rebounds for Athens during 2004-05.
The 6-foot-9 senior set state career records for rebounds (1,820) and blocked shots (667) while scoring 2,915 points his four-year career playing for his father, Venard Hendrix.
The University of Alabama signee will be playing in a national all-star game the day of the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.
Three other players from northwest Alabama were also honored Thursday.
Amber Rutherford of Hatton was named the girls Class 2A player of the year, and Blair Bowens of Deshler was named the Class 4A player of the year.
Michael Ricks of R.A. Hubbard was named the boys Class 1A player of the year.
Other girls Player of the Year class winners were Mikie Garner of Spring Garden in Class 1A, Robin Porter of Abbeville in Class 3A, and Sammeika Thrash of Ramsay in Class 5A.
Other boys Player of the Year class winners were George Drake of Calera in Class 2A, Joey Cameron of Leeds in Class 3A, Jeremy Harris of Saks in Class 4A and Brandon Hollinger of LeFlore in Class 6A.
