Surplus Food Under Consideration Here

By Staff
Franklin County officials were to decide Wednesday afternoon if surplus federal foods are to be distributed to needy residents of this area.
Speedy approval was expected after the Board of Revenue Tuesday voted to participate on a 60-40 cost-sharing basis.
County mayors, the Board of Revenue and other leaders were to meet then with J.F. Bentley, state chairman of the food committee, Alabama Department of Public Welfare, to seek a definite decision.
Gas Prices Go Up on Tuesday
Alabama's new one-cent a gallon gasoline tax went into effect in Franklin County Tuesday, sending prices here to 30.9 cents per gallon for regular and 33.4 for ethyl.
The hike, voted in a special session of the Legislature in January and February, will provide funds for Gov. James E. Folsom's road building program.
Prices actually increased a cent and one-half in Franklin County due to a half-cent increase by major oil companies, according to Russellville dealers.
