The Colbert Heights Wildcats are turning to one of their own to help revive a football program that has struggled over the past few years.
The Wildcats recently named David Ward, a Russellville resident and a 1981 graduate of Colbert Heights, as their new head football coach.
Ward, whose contract officially begins on February 1, is taking over for Shannon McGregory, who served as the Wildcats' coach for seven seasons.
Ward said that being an alumnus of Colbert Heights played a role in his decision to leave his position as principal at New Bethel school and return to coaching.
Ward will remain as principal at New Bethel through the rest of this school year.
The Wildcats went 3-7 last year in McGregory's final season.
Ward played played every sport at Colbert Heights before going on to play football and baseball at the University of North Alabama.
He will work with one of his old coaches, Colbert Heights principal Leroy Willis.
