RPD begins explorer training

Russellville Police Chief Chris Hargett is looking for a few good men…or in this case, a few good girls and boys.
As part of the Learning for Life Explorer program, the department will hold an orientation for parents and youth on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. at Russellville City Hall. The purpose of the orientation will be to offer information about law enforcement exploring and to accept applications for those interested.
The program is designed for young people age 14 to 20 who have an interest in law enforcement. Potential members must have completed the eighth grade and not be older than 20, must still be in school with at least a "C" average, must not have any arrests or received any serious disciplinary action at school, and must have self-discipline and determination.
The Exploring program, a part of Learning for Life, which is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, is a career education program. The purpose of the program, according to a press release, is "to provide experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Explorers are ready to investigate the meaning of interdependence in their personal relationships and
communities."
Hargett said Lt. Mike Prince initiated the process of beginning an Explorer program in Russellville. Hargett said several other cities in north Alabama, including Hartselle, a city similar in size to Russellville, have a successful Explorer program.
