Council: District lines to remain the same

Citizens of District 4 told the Russellville City Council last week at a public hearing that they did not want their voting district lines changed.
Monday night, the city council granted their wish.
The city, which is under a federal mandate to submit a re-districting plan to a federal judge, voted Monday night to re-certify the existing districts and leave the boundary lines unchanged.
The risk now, according to city councilman Craig Grissom, is that the judge could order the U.S. Department of Justice to redraw the district lines without the city's input.
The council held a public hearing last Thursday to get input from citizens on a re-districting plan drawn up by the Northwest Council of Local Governments.
In other business Monday, the council voted to change the polling place for District 5 from the Electric Warehouse to the A.W. Todd Centre.
Also, the council voted to grant a paid holiday for city employees on Jan. 17 in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.
