The West Lauderdale Knights came alive for four touchdowns in the fourth quarter and picked up a 34-20 come-from-behind victory over Southeast Lauderdale on Friday night.
The homestanding Knights completed just two passes in the victory but Scott Truesdale and Dameon Baylor wore down the Southeast defense to lead West Lauderdale to the win.
Truesdale finished with 176 yards on the night and Baylor ran for 175 to move the Knights to 4-2 overall for the year and 2-1 in Division 5-3A play.
After giving up 20 points in the first half, the West Lauderdale defense shut out the Tigers in the second half.
Southeast Lauderdale controlled the first-half action and opened the game with a 17-play, 78-yard drive for a touchdown.
The Tigers converted a fourth-down play in their own territory and scored with 4:59 left in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Aaron Larkin. Drew Harper's kick made the score 7-0.
After stopping the Knight offense, the Tigers took over on their own 20-yard line and didn't take long to extend their lead.
Marcus Walker took the ball 74 yards on the first play from scrimmage for Southeast and Harper scored on a one-yard sneak three plays later to make the score 13-0 with 2:05 left in the first quarter.
West Lauderdale moved the ball down the field on its next possession but turned the ball over on downs at the Southeast 17-yard line.
The Knight defense came up with a huge play on the ensuing Tigers possession. Michael Pogue picked off a Southeast pass and returned it to the Southeast 24-yard line.
Baylor carried the next play for 19 yards and scored on a one-yard run two plays later. Dimitri Uhl hit the PAT to make the score 13-7.
Southeast answered on its next possession. The Tigers moved out to their own 40-yard line after a 27-yard run by Walker and Harper hit Rodney Walk with a 60-yard touchdown pass to give Southeast a 20-7 lead going into half.
The third quarter belonged the West Lauderdale, however. The Knights moved the ball down the field on nine plays and Austin Davis scored on a one-yard run to make the score 20-14.
A fumble recovery by Judd Godwin on the Southeast 24-yard line set up another West Lauderdale touchdown. Baylor carried the ball to the one-yard line before fumbling into the end zone. Christian Trussell was in the right place at the right time and fell on the ball for the touchdown to give the Knights a 21-20 lead.
West Lauderdale scored again on its next possession. The Knights drove the ball 69 yards on seven plays and Baylor scored from three yards out to give West Lauderdale a 27-20 lead. Trouble with the hold on the PAT kept the Knight lead at seven points with 2:55 left in the third.
The Knights capped off their big third quarter with a touchdown with 58 seconds left in the third. Truesdale rumbled in from five yards out to give West the 34-20 victory.
West Lauderdale will play at Newton High next week.
Southeast drops to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in division play with the loss. The Tigers will play Choctaw Central next week.
