JACKSON Ten projects to improve railroad crossings in Newton and Scott counties were approved Tuesday by the Mississippi Transportation Commission.
The projects were among 15 added under a railroad grade crossing safety program, a $2.6 million effort funded through a partnership between MDOT and Kansas City Southern Railway. Under the program, new safety features will be installed at the crossings, including flashing light signals and pre-cast concrete surfaces.
The Newton and Scott county projects include:
Newton County: Installation of flashing light signals, gates and a pre-cast concrete surface at Forest Road, Ponderosa Road, Potterchitto Road, Buckley Road and Roy Mann Road;
Scott County: Installation of flashing light signals and gates at State Street in Morton, Morris Tullos Drive in Morton, Highway 13 in Morton, Highway 481 in Morton and VFW Road.
The other five railroad crossing safety projects were approved for Hinds and Rankin counties, Hall said.
