Area bowling tournaments abound

The State Games of Mississippi bowling competition is in the books. Thanks to all local bowlers who took part. I hope to have final results for you next week.
Meanwhile, other events continue to capture the attention of local bowlers. A full slate of tournaments and other events will highlight the next several weeks as we head toward the 2004-05 bowling season. The Handicap Doubles Tournament at Playland Bowl in Selma, Ala., will begin this weekend and run through Aug. 1. Former Meridian bowler and current owner Arnold Gibbs invites all area bowlers to take part in this tournament, which features a $1,000 guaranteed first-place prize.
Locally, Stan's Classic Tournaments has begun a repeat of the popular "Bowl Your Average" tournament which will run through July 21. You may take part on specified dates on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through July 21. You may bowl anytime between 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays and 2-6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Unlike the previous tournament, bowlers may cash up to three times. For complete rules and entry fees, check the flyers available at Dixie Bowl Lanes or check online at bowling100.com.
Ladies, don't forget the 17th Annual "500" Club tournament slated for July 17-18 at Spanish Trail Lanes in Gautier. The July 10 deadline for entries is rapidly closing in, so pick up your entry forms and get it sent in soon. For the first time, you may invite either a "400" or "600" bowler to bowl with you.
Also for the ladies, the Mississippi WBA has announced plans for the 40th Annual Workshop and Singles Tournament, which will be held Aug. 14 at the Holiday Inn on Highway 19 in Gulfport. You must attend the workshop to be eligible to enter the tournament at Triangle Lanes in Gulfport. Your pre-registration must be in by Aug. 11. Pick up entry forms at Dixie Bowl.
Don't forget that the Stan's Classic Tournaments Doubles Tournament kicks off July 30 and runs each weekend through Labor Day. This year's tournament features a $4,000 first place guarantee regardless of entries. Multiple participation is allowed with unlimited partners each time you bowl. For complete rules and entry forms, come by Dixie Bowl or visit Stan's Classic Tournaments online at the above mentioned address.
Quickly checking in on local summer league action, we see both M.A. Copeland and Shelia Dearman posting some excellent scores during the past week. Meanwhile, Stan Bottorff posted the high game of the week with a 267. Both M.A. and Shelia posted games of 255. M.A. finished his set in the Tuesday Summer Mixed with a 700 on the nose, and Shelia finished up the Adult-Junior league with a nice 650. R.D. Glenn clobbered a nice 232 in the Senior Citizens Summer league, while Joe Hasson continues to impress in that league after a nice 616 set.
That's all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
