Lady Tornadoes make Gentry proud
While he could have been happier if his Philadelphia girls' basketball team could have won its Class 2A MHSAA State Tournament game with Baldwyn Monday, Lady Tornadoes' coach Jason Gentry left proud for what his team did this season.
Despite having four starters foul out Monday, Philadelphia took Baldwyn to double overtime before losing 70-67.
Up 57-54, the Lady Tornadoes had two chances to close out the win in the final 19.3 seconds of regulation, but Danielle Cole and Ashley Lowery both missed the front end of one-and-ones.
Two free throws by Baldwyn's Schiquana Price with one second left in regulation knotted the game at 57-57.
Both teams scored seven points in the first overtime.
Lowery buried a trey from the right wing with 10.5 seconds left in the first extra period to tie the game at 64-64.
Philadelphia actually finished 28-6 after getting a forfeit from Newton after the Lady Tigers were ruled ineligible to compete in postseason action.

Picking sides
West Lauderdale and Newton County will renew an old rivarly in prep baseball Friday night in Collinsivlle at 7 p.m. The Cougars have gotten off to a great start at 5-1 after defeating Forest 8-5 on Wednesday night.

Nothing deep
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Sumter County will never be criticized as a team of free-wheeling shooters.
The Wildcats (30-2) didn't shoot a single three-point shot in their 77-58 victory over Litchfield (24-9) in the boys Class 3A State Championship semifinals.
The lack of long-range shooters didn't seem to bother Sumter County coach Johnny Patrick all that much after the game.
Asked if he had any three-point shooters, Patrick quickly replied, "No, I haven't."
