School counts

By Staff
Jan. 25, 2004
The message is simple: School counts. That's the basic thought behind a new initiative of the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation and its Education Committee. It's a good initiative that deserves serious attention.
Many business leaders today say what they're looking for most in young employees is not necessarily a report card that lists straight A's. They are looking for prospective employees who demonstrate a sense of responsibility, discipline and the ability to work productively as a member of a team. These sorts of life skills are not always part of an academic curriculum, yet they are vital to later success.
School Counts is a program designed to give students extra incentives to do their best in school, and to connect with local businesses that appreciate their efforts. About 80 businesses have already indicated a willingness to participate.
Whether students get first dibbs on a job interview or some sort of discount on purchases, School Counts can be a valuable addition to the goal of local education: Helping give students the means to build a successful life.
We're delighted to see EMBDC embark on such an innovative path.
