MADDEN Both Leake Academy boys' basketball coach Phil Shepard and his Winston Academy counterpart Farrell Rigby saw Monday's contest as a good test for the upcoming postseason tournaments.
Leake avenged an earlier loss to the Patriots at Louisville as they held on for an 88-77 homecourt win.
Free throw shooting down the stretch proved crucial as the Rebels were 11-of-16 at the charity stripe over the final 1:41.
Leake led 24-19 at the end of the first quarter, thanks largely to four 3-point baskets from Daniel Jones.
The Rebels carried a 45-31 lead into halftime with Jones already having 20 points. Winston's Brandon Jennings picked up 21 of his 29 points in the first half. He had four treys in the first half.
Winston opened the second half with an 11-0 run to close to within 45-42 on a putback basket by Jon Duncan with 6:25 left in the third quarter.
Cory Burns knocked down a pair of treys in a 23-second span to give Leake a 58-46 lead with 3:08 to go in the third stanza.
The Rebels led 65-52 to start the fourth quarter.
A 7-0 run highlighted by back-to-back baskets by Justin Eaves pulled Winston to within 75-69 with 2:30 left in the contest.
The Rebels got their final basket when Brian Henry got open underneath the goal with 2:11 remaining.
Leake then knocked down 11-of-16 free shots, including a 4-of-4 showing by Jones on a pair of intentional fouls, to improve to 22-4.
Jones led Leake with 28 points. Burns finished with 22, Matthew Wilkerson and Jay Allen both had 11, and Henry and Charlie Lavender both scored eight.
Winston, 21-4, got 29 points from Jennings, 17 from Eaves, 16 from Patrick Peterson, and 13 from Jon Duncan.
