Former head coach checks out ECCC Lady Warriors

Among those in the standing room only crowd for East Central Community College's 78-60 victory over Meridian Community College Thursday night at Decatur was former Lady Warriors head coach Sammy Pace.
Pace coached the Lady Warriors from 1985-2001 and led ECCC to national tournament appearances in 1994 and 2001. He is currently boys' basketball coach at Sumrall High School.
The current ECCC women's team is ranked No. 23 in the NJCAA in the Jan. 13 poll. Trinity Valley (Texas) was No. 1 followed by Gulf Coast (Fla.) Community College. Pensacola (Fla.) Junior College, a 102-48 winner over Meridian Community College in December, checks in at No. 3.
Northeast Mississippi Community College was seventh. Cloud County (Kan.) Community College, which beat ECCC by one point en route to winning the 2001 national championship, is No. 24.

Jones sweeps Hinds
The Bobcats of Jones Junior College improved to 13-1 overall and 4-0 in the MACJC South Division as they took a 69-62 win over Hinds Thursday night in Utica. Timothy Broomfield led JCJC with 22 points.
The Lady Bobcats also won as they blasted Hinds 96-73. Brittany Baham led JCJC with 20 points, Jasmine Versher scored 14, Natalie Jordan 13, and Sharon Pendarvis 11.
Jones improves to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in division play.

Gulf Coast sweeps
Southwest on Thursday
The Southwest Bears dropped a 58-56 MACJC South Division contest to Mississippi Gulf Coast Thursday to fall to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in division play.
The Lady Bears lost an 85-59 decision and fell to 5-9, 2-2.
Both Southwest clubs visit Jones County Tuesday for a pair of division games.

PRCC splits with Co-Lin
Pearl River split with rival Copiah-Lincoln Thursday in MACJC South Division basketball action.
The Lady Wildcats fell 83-63 to the Lady Wolves to even their overall record to 7-7 and 2-2 in division play, while the Wildcats pulled out a 69-68 squeaker to improve to 9-5 and 3-1.
Carmen Labat of Bay High paced the Lady Wildcats with 20 points.
Co-Lin's Gloria Lewis bucketed a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Wolves, while Renee Field added 18.
In the men's game, Larry Brackins paced the Wildcats with 24 points.
Co-Lin's Jeremy Richardson hit a game-high 26 points.
PRCC returns to action Tuesday when Hinds visits Poplarville, then travels to Meridian Thursday, Jan. 22, for more league play.

Northwest CC Rangers check in at No. 3
For the second consecutive week, the Northwest Ranger basketball team is ranked No. 3 in the country by the NJCAA. The Top 25 poll was released Tuesday.
The Rangers, 15-1 overall, were ranked No. 29 the NJCAA's preseason poll.
Northwest hasn't lost since dropping a 94-80 decision to Southwest Tennessee, formerly known as Shelby State, on Nov. 6 in Senatobia. Since then, the Rangers have reeled off 12 consecutive victories.

Jerminey Bennett of Panola (Texas) College leads the NJCAA men in scoring as he is averaging 29.7 points per game. Marcus Perry of Southern Union (Ala.) State is second with a 26.0 point average. In third place is Greg Dickinson of Jefferson Davis (Ala.) Community College with a 23.6 average.
Teresa Reynolds of Malcolm X College leads the NJCAA women with a 28.8 average. Rashidat Sadiq of Central Arizona College is second with a 25.3 scoring clip. Northwest Mississippi's Nikita Taylor is fifth, averaging 21.6 points per contest.

MCC opens Feb. 14
The Meridian Community College baseball team, ranked No. 5 in the country preseason, opens the 2004 season on the road against Jeff Davis (Ala.) Community College on Feb. 14. The doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
