Tigers whip Bulldogs

NEWTON Newton coach Pepper Posey took a page out of legendary East Mississippi coach Bull Sullivan's playbook this week.
After two days of physical practice, the Tigers responded with a 51-7 whipping of Clarkdale Friday night at E.L. Morgan Field.
The Tigers improve to 4-6 on the season and 3-2 in 5-2A play and will travel to East Marion as the No. 3 seed from the region. Clarkdale finishes at 2-8.
After losing 8-0 to Lake last week, Posey went back to the basics and used an old Sullivan trick during practice this week. During an hour-long scrimmage on Monday and Tuesday, Posey had his offense running uphill and his defense playing downhill.
The Tiger offense responded 528 yards of offense and 18 first downs. On the other hand, Clarkdale managed only 35 yards of total offense and two first downs as the Newton defense had 14 plays for a loss.
Leading the way for the Tigers was senior fullback Cornelius Caraway who had 170 yards on 10 carries and three touchdowns on runs of 65, 2, and 26 yards.
said. "We had a lot of work to do after last week's game and the younger players stepped up tonight. The younger guys promised the seniors they would win for us tonight. They saw what it takes to win games and go to the
playoffs."
The Tigers jumped on the Bulldogs early as Caraway scored on a 65-yard
run on the game's first play. Phillip Evans' PAT gave Newton a 7-0 lead with
11:41 left in the first.
After a Clarkdale punt, the Tigers used an 8-play, 77-yard drive to take
a 13-0 lead on a Caraway 2-yard run with 6:38 left in the first.
After another Clarkdale punt, Newton needed only five plays to go 56
yards as Montez Moore scored on a 20-yard keeper with 2:35 left in the first for a 19-0 Newton lead.
Joey Etheridge said. "With what they have had to overcome and still have a
chance to make the playoffs, I couldn't ask any more of them."
The Tigers added two more scores in the second quarter as Caraway scored on a 26-yard run and Eddie Washington scored on a 33-yard run to give the Tigers a 33-0 halftime lead. Washington finished with 93 yards on nine carries.
Newton added one score on the third as senior Travaone Evans scored on a 6-yard run with 6:13 left in the third to cap off an 8-play, 80-yard drive
for a 39-0 Tiger lead. Evans also had a big night as he had 139 yards on
eight carries.
The Tigers went up 45-0 early in the fourth as D'Artagan Dawkins scored
on a 1-yard plunge with 11:19 left to play.
Clarkdale got its only score with 2:44 left in the game as Ian
McLaughlin recovered a Newton fumble in the end zone. Chris Sirven's PAT
make it 45-7.
Newton's Darron Thames added a 41-yard touchdown run with 42.6 left in the game for the final score.
