Head Scout: On his honor

Staff writer Steve Gillespie's profile of retiring Boy Scouts Choctaw Area Council executive Noel Evans in last Sunday's paper captured the essence of a man whose life has been devoted to the Scouts. The sparkle in Evans' eyes, the grin on his face, the genuine enthusiasm in his voice are always present when the subject turns to Scouting.
Noel Evans is one of those true Americans whose 37-year career in Scouting reflects his true interest in guiding the development of young lives along the lines of Boy Scout law: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Personally, Evans lives those principles. Professionally, his mentoring has shaped countless lives.
During 17 years as Scout executive Evans worked hard. Among his accomplishments: guiding remodeling at Camp Binachi and growing the council endowment from about $300,000 to more than $1 million. He took the lead in the Learning for Life program, a character education Scouting initiative.
We take the occasion of his retirement to extend our sincere appreciation for his service to this community. In the finest tradition of Scouting, he brought honor to the mission.
