Fall &Winter bowling leagues starting soon

The 2003/2004 Fall &Winter season is nearly upon us. The week of Aug. 11-15 will see the startup meetings for all adult leagues with competition beginning the following week. Monday, Aug. 11 will have the Senior Citizens league at 1 p.m. and the Monday Nighters and Hucklebuck (men) leagues meeting at 6:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Aug. 12 meetings will be held for the Tuesday Night Mixed and Bowlerettes (ladies) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, will be the meeting date for the Wednesday Night Mixed league. Thursday, Aug. 14, will be the meeting date for the Dixie Belles (ladies) and Queen City (men) at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, will see the meeting of the Ball &Chain (mixed) league.
The Junior leagues will begin later in the month. The Wednesday Fun Time league will meet Aug. 27 and begin bowling Sept. 3. The Saturday Morning juniors will have meeting dates Aug. 23 and Aug. 30 with competition beginning Sept. 6.
League offices and secretaries should begin contacting returning team captains to see if there are any vacancies which will need filling. New bowlers are always welcome in all leagues. If you are interested in joining a team or have a team of your own you would like to place in a league, call or stop by Dixie Bowl Lanes. Any of the staff will be happy to assist you.
The 2nd Annual Handicap Doubles tournament kicks off this weekend with shifts at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1. Competition will continue each weekend through Labor Day. There will be no shifts scheduled this Sunday, Aug. 3. This year, the tournament has teamed up with Coca-Cola and is offering a guaranteed First Place payout of $4000, regardless of the number of entries. It is a multiple participation event meaning you may bowl as often as you like and may have up to three doubles partners each time you bowl. Summer league actions continues with most leagues finishing up next week. The only exception is the Tuesday Summer Mixed which will conclude Aug. 12. In recent action, Mike Cothern and Albert Edmonds managed to crank out 700s with Mike carding a 707 and Albert blasting a nice 743. Best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery go out to longtime bowler D.D. Hawkins who was scheduled to undergo major surgery yesterday. We hope to see you back soon, D.D.
