MUW takes two upset wins at GSC tourney

The Blues extended the Mississippi University for Women's athletic program for at least another day with two upset wins in the Gulf South Conference Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament at Northeast Park on Saturday.
Facing their final games of existence, the Blues upset Arkansas-Monticello 1-0 in eight innings in their first game of the day and then beat Valdosta State 3-2 with a walk-off home run in the second game.
The two wins move MUW into the finals of the winner's bracket which was scheduled for 10 p.m. on Saturday night.
In the first game, Ashley Holmes pitched eight shut out innings and allowed only three hits to outduel Arkansas-Monticello's Lindsey Kight in an extra inning game.
MUW scored a run in the top of the eighth inning and then held on to take the 1-0 victory to move into the winner's bracket.
In the top of the eighth, Jessica Malone reached base with a single to left field. Heather Ford bunted here over to second base to give MUW a runner in scoring position with one out.
Brandi Tynes followed and just missed a home run as her blast hooked just left of the foul pole for a long strike. A few pitches later, however, Tynes came through with a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Valdosta State 2
MUW continued to play inspired softball in a winner's bracket game with Valdosta State and Rachel Breaux came through with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Blues a 3-2 upset win over Valdosta State.
Valdosta State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but MUW answered with a run in the second and another run in the third to take a 2-1 lead.
