Today eight fast-pitch softball teams will compete in the Gulf South Conference Tournament at Northeast Park, but on Friday night the teams took some time to teach.
For the sixth consecutive year, the GSC teams involved in the tournament put on a softball clinic for area youth at Northeast Park.
This year, 156 kids showed up for instruction from the college players.
The Youth Education in Sports (YES) clinic was for ages 6 to 15 and was a great opportunity for young players to learn more about the game.
Players from Alabama Huntsville, Arkansas-Monticello, Central Arkansas, Delta State, Mississippi University for Women, Southern Arkansas, Valdosta State and West Florida were all there to work with the kids.
The participation in the tournament was good, but there was still room for many more players to be involved in the activity.
The clinic was free of charge for everyone that wanted to be involved and the participants were also given some other goodies for being involved.
The young players were taught fundamentals and were able to work with the eight teams on four different fields. Each age group was able to rotate to each team to learn a different skill.
This was one of several visits to the clinic for some players, but newcomers were able to enjoy the two-hour camp as well and next year more young players can be involved in the event.
