EMCC student receives honor

East Mississippi Community College sophomore George Spinks of DeKalb was recognized this month as one of 20 students chosen nationwide for the USA Today All-USA Academic First Team for community and junior colleges.
The team is sponsored by USA Today, Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges. Spinks also was named to the Mississippi All-State Academic First Team.
He also was chosen as the state's Centennial Scholar, an honor sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges and given to the highest scoring student in each state in the All-USA Academic Team competition. Spinks will receive a $2,000 scholarship funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation. As a First Team member, Spinks was awarded a $2,500 scholarship funded by USA Today.
Spinks traveled to Dallas to the American Association of Community Colleges convention for the presentation ceremony. Also attending the ceremony were Spinks's parents and Davis.
