School officials report on five-year plan

Character education, upgrades of physical facilities and curriculum changes were among the items covered Friday in an update on Meridian Public Schools' five-year strategic plan.
The plan, adopted in 1999, includes nine strategies that officials believe can help the schools progress, including providing a safe climate conducive to learning, communicating effectively with the public and providing appropriate character development.
Marion Park Principal Martha Walker, chairperson of one of the plan's components, said members of her group have discussed implementation of a character education program, renovations and electrical upgrades in schools, technological updates at Meridian High School and improvements in the school curriculum.
She said property has been purchased across from Ross Collins for Meridian High School's use and a lot adjacent to Carver Middle School has been purchased for use as a playground for students.
She also said there were discussions about how to involve more parents and the community at large in Meridian public school issues.
Walker's comments came as reports were presented to School Superintendent Dr. Janet McLin.
