Houston withdraws from Tax Collector's race

Gary D. Houston of Meridian withdrew his candidacy for Lauderdale County Tax Collector on Friday.
Houston, executive director of the Youth Excitement Team, an after-school tutoring program, qualified to run as a Democrat last month. Houston said he will support the only other Democrat who qualified in the race, Leland Harper.
As the lone Democrat left on the ballot, Harper will apparently face either incumbent Tax Collector Stanley Shannon or William H. "Rick" Entrekin Jr., both of whom are running as Republicans.
The general election is Nov. 4 .
